KUCHING, Oct 26: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has been reappointed for a three-year term as pro-chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).

Unimas vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi said the appointment is effective until March 14, 2026, TVS reported.

According to Mohamad Kadim, the appointment has received the approval of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

“We handed over to the Premier earlier his reappointment as pro-chancellor of Unimas for a three-year term beginning on March 15, 2023 and ending on March 14, 2026. His appointment has already been approved by His Majesty the King and implemented by Head of the State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud,” he said when met by reporters after paying a courtesy call on Abang Johari at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here today, as quoted by TVS.

Mohamad Kadim noted that the visit, which was accompanied by the top management of Unimas, included a briefing on the 27th Unimas Convocation Ceremony, which will be officiated by the Premier, as per TVS.

In addition, it was stated that the convocation ceremony will be held from Nov 6 to Nov 9, 2023, with seven sessions involving 3,800 bachelor, master, degree, and doctoral recipients.

In a related development, TVS reported that the university is optimistic that the Unimas Teaching Hospital project will be completed on time.

“The Unimas Teaching Hospital project has two major components. The first is the Primary Health Centre, which consists of specialist clinics. God willing, this component will be completed by the end of this year, as planned.

“While the second component, which is the university’s Teaching Hospital, will be completed in July 2025, two years from now,” he explained when asked to comment on the latest development of the Unimas Teaching Hospital project.

As per the Unimas vice-chancellor, the project costs more than RM500 million and will take approximately four years to complete. — DayakDaily
