KUCHING, Aug 20: Police are investigating a viral five-second video allegedly showing a man stepping on the Sarawak flag under two laws after receiving two reports over the footage today.
Kuching District Police chief Alexson Naga Chabu said the case was being investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
“Initial investigations found that the five-second video had been uploaded by a TikTok user before being reshared by several other social media accounts,” he said in a statement today.
Section 504 of the Penal Code provides for imprisonment of up to two years, a fine, or both upon conviction.
Meanwhile, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 provides for a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment of up to one year, or both upon conviction.
Alexson advised the public against committing acts that could disrupt public peace or engaging in provocations that could trigger public anger.
He also urged anyone with information related to the incident to assist the investigation by contacting the Kuching District Police Headquarters at 082-244444.
Earlier today, the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS) lodged a police report at Gita Police Station at 1.49pm over the video.
Later tonight, about 40 members of Sarawak PBB Youth, including State executive committee members and Youth chiefs from Kuching and Samarahan, lodged a separate report at Sungai Maong Police Station over the same footage.
The two reports were lodged separately after the video circulated on social media, with both groups calling for police action over the alleged act of stepping on the Sarawak flag. — DayakDaily
