KUCHING, Sept 9: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has deployed two roll-on roll-off (RoRo) bins and assisted residents in Kenyalang Park to dispose of damaged furniture, household items and other debris following recent strong winds and heavy rain that damaged several homes and tore off roofs.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, accompanied by councillors and community leaders, visited the affected area to assess the damage and engage directly with residents impacted by the incident.
Wee said the visit enabled the council to better understand the immediate needs of affected families and determine the assistance that could be provided without delay.
During the engagement, residents highlighted the need for help in removing damaged furniture, household items and other materials that had been exposed to rainwater following the storm.
In response, MBKS arranged for two RoRo bins to be placed in the neighbourhood, allowing residents to conveniently dispose of damaged belongings. The council also mobilised personnel to assist with waste clearance and removal operations.
Special attention was given to elderly residents who were unable to clear damaged items on their own.
In one case, MBKS deployed a team of younger staff members to help an elderly household remove and dispose of damaged belongings from their home.
“After a disaster, the work does not end with the initial response. We must continue to follow up because some residents, especially the elderly, may still need help to clear their homes and return to their normal daily lives,” Wee said in a statement today.
He added that MBKS would continue to extend assistance wherever possible within the council’s capacity.
“If an elderly person cannot move heavy furniture or clear damaged items, we should not leave them to manage alone. Our staff are there to help where we can,” he said.
Wee also expressed appreciation to Trienekens for providing the RoRo bins through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative.
“During times of disaster, everyone must work together. The council, councillors, community leaders, the private sector and residents all have a role to play,” he said.
He stressed that the incident underscored the importance of strong cooperation between the council and the community.
“MBKS may not be able to prevent natural incidents such as strong winds, but we can make sure that when our residents need help, we respond as quickly as possible.
“This is the kind of caring community we want in Kuching South, where we look out for one another, especially the elderly and those who need assistance the most,” he added. — DayakDaily
