KUCHING, Aug 20: The Sarawak PBB Youth Movement has demanded a thorough police investigation into a viral video allegedly showing an individual stepping on the Sarawak flag, describing the act as an insult to the State’s identity and an affront to Sarawakians.
Sarawak PBB Youth deputy chief Afiq Fikri Ibrahim said the movement will not tolerate what it considers a deliberate provocation capable of inflaming racial and inter-state tensions.
“We reject completely this kind of provocation. We will not be intimidated or afraid. We stand firmly behind the Federal Constitution and what is fair and sincere towards our State symbol, the Sarawak flag,” he said in an audio recording shared with DayakDaily.
Afiq, who is also PBB Youth chief for Satok, spoke after about 40 members of the movement lodged a police report at Sungai Maong Police Station tonight.
The group comprised State Youth executive committee members, divisional Youth chiefs and members from Kuching and Samarahan.
He said the video, which has circulated on TikTok and Facebook, is particularly disturbing in the context of Sarawak’s multiracial and harmonious society.
“What is worrying is that once the video appeared, various comments followed, including insults and support. This creates a situation that is not conducive to Sarawak,” he said.
According to the police report, the video was circulated on Facebook through an account identified as ‘Omarlittleblud’, which allegedly credited the video to TikTok user Albedo10 (@albedo10).
The report stated that ‘Omarlittleblud’ had denied producing the video and claimed to have received it from Albedo10, although the video could no longer be found on the latter’s account when the report was made.
The police report also highlighted two other posts allegedly linked to the Albedo10 account, which the complainants claim contain remarks targeting Sarawakians, particularly the State’s major ethnic groups.
One of the posts allegedly stated that Sarawakians would not be allowed to purchase the account holder’s products because they had supposedly “caused many problems”.
Another allegedly said the account holder has problems with people from Sarawak, particularly its major ethnic groups, and does not want to reconcile or forgive them, while accusing them of bringing “misfortune”.
The report claimed such posts amount to racial discrimination and could potentially fuel tension between communities.
Afiq said the movement wants the police to investigate the entire chain of content and identify those responsible.
He declined to determine whether the alleged offences fall under the Sedition Act, saying that should be left to the authorities.
“As I am not a legal practitioner, I cannot say whether it does or does not. Let the police investigate and let the prosecution decide,” he said.
For PBB Youth, however, the symbolism of the alleged act is clear.
“We know the flag represents our identity. When it is stepped on, it is as if we, the people of Sarawak, are being stepped on. That is not something civilised for us,” Afiq said.
He added that tonight’s report is the first lodged by the State-level Youth movement, with similar reports potentially to follow from other PBB Youth branches Statewide.
Meanwhile, PBB Youth secretary-general and Tanjung Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan said he fully supports the move and hopes the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will investigate those responsible.
“Our position in the State Youth movement is always based on the Sarawak Constitution and the Federal Constitution. We do not want to see the flag of any State being insulted or stepped on like this. That is our position,” he said. — DayakDaily
