KUCHING, March 11: Members of the public, especially residents in Petra Jaya, are encouraged to become trained community Bomba volunteers by joining related programs organised by the Sarawak Fire And Rescue Department (Bomba).

Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof said with proper training, these community volunteers would always be ready to provide initial assistance during any emergencies or rescue missions.

“I call on all community leaders at Petra Jaya and elsewhere to encourage their families and communities to join such a program, and by doing so, they could help themselves or their community first before Bomba comes to the rescue.

“Such a program is good as it helps to equip the people with the skills and knowledge on how to act and what is needed when there is an emergency or any form of rescue situation,” he said.

Meanwhile, Fadillah reminded the public that firefighters are unsung heroes who should be commended for their services and roles in keeping the communities safe.

He lamented that people tend to forget about Bomba’s sacrifices and contributions until there is an emergency or a disaster.

“We tend to glorify other uniform bodies like the army and the police, but people forget that Bomba also plays a significant role in our community and the country, and these unsung heroes should be commended.

“It is time that the community thanks and commends Bomba for their services and sacrifices to the people,” he said when launching the Community Bomba Carnival Program held at the Petra Jaya Bomba station here today.

Also present at the community program were Sarawak Bomba director Datu Khirudin Drahman and 875 community Bomba volunteers. — Dayakdaily
