KUCHING, Feb 1: The Natural Resources Environmental Board (NREB) Sarawak is poised to take over responsibilities concerning environmental autonomy from the Federal government by January 2025, announced Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh.
At the 30th-anniversary celebration of NREB held at Menara Pelita, Len Talif informed reporters that NREB has already commenced several environmental programs.
With discussions underway regarding the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), the transfer of environmental matters to NREB is being expedited.
“We are progressively taking up all related activities, while assessing our capacity and capability to implement them,” stated Len Talif.
He elaborated on the importance of addressing the legal and financial aspects of this transition, highlighting the necessity for NREB to have both the mandate and financial backing to execute these activities independently of the Federal government.
“It (discussion) has been ongoing for the last two-years,” he added. — DayakDaily
