KUCHING, Dec 13: Rough sea conditions resulting from the Northeast monsoon has contributed to the delayed arrival of sugar supplies in Miri from Peninsular Malaysia.

Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Miri branch head Joe Azmi Jamil said the Northeast monsoon had caused a disruption in the supply chain.

Despite this, he reassured the public that Miri is not experiencing a sugar shortage.

“The scarcity of sugar in the city is not due to the absence of the essential commodity in the market.

“During an inspection conducted by the KPDN Miri branch, it was found that sugar continues to be available in supermarkets and retail stores throughout Miri,” he told TVS today.

Joe pointed out that increased demand from micro, small, and medium enterprises, particularly from cake shops, restaurants, and confectioners in anticipation of Christmas and Chinese New Year, has also caused sugar to quickly run out in the market.

“In response to the situation, the Ministry has taken action by issuing a notice under Section 12a of the Supply Control Regulations (PPKB) 1974 to the four main sugar wholesalers in Miri to establish buffer stocks to ensure a consistent supply of sugar at the prescribed rate,” he explained.
