MIRI, July 15: A total of 20 water bombing runs involving 26,000 litres of water successfully extinguished a forest fire at Niah National Park after a three-day firefighting operation involving aerial and ground teams.
The operation concluded at 12pm today, with the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak confirming that the entire affected area of 1.62 hectares had been fully extinguished, leaving no remaining active fire areas.
The final stage of the operation began at 9.45am, when the Bomba launched helicopter-assisted firefighting using the water bombing technique. The aerial operation lasted three hours and 36 minutes, with repeated water drops carried out to suppress the remaining hotspots and ensure the fire was completely brought under control.
The firefighting operation involved the Bomba Air Unit, which deployed one MI-171 helicopter (M994-04) supported by 11 personnel, while the Bomba Batu Niah Station provided one Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) and eight personnel led by PBT I Nasir Drahman.
The operation also received support from several agencies, including the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), which assisted in managing the incident area and coordination efforts.
The Bomba Sarawak Operations Command Centre oversaw the response, coordinating aerial and ground firefighting resources throughout the three-day operation.
Authorities confirmed that the Niah National Park forest fire has now been 100 per cent extinguished, with monitoring and follow-up measures to ensure the area remains safe. — DayakDaily
