KUCHING, July 15: Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) has upgraded its digital infrastructure with Sarawak’s first live indoor 5G coverage, enhancing connectivity capacity for exhibitions, conferences and events involving high user demand.
According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), the in-building coverage (IBC) solution, deployed at BCCK 1, provides ULTRA5G connectivity across more than 3,740 square metres, enabling faster and more stable internet access during large-scale events.
Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak (MUT) Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi said the implementation of 5G connectivity at BCCK demonstrated the importance of advanced telecommunications infrastructure in supporting the State’s event industry.
He said the facility could also serve as a foundation for extending similar connectivity to BCCK 2 once the expansion project is completed.
“The difference between 4G and 5G is very significant. If 4G is around 200 megabits per second, 5G can reach more than 1,100 megabits per second, which is much faster,” he told reporters during the Borneo International Water and Wastewater Exhibition and Conference (BIWWEC) 2026 here on today.
Julaihi said high-speed connectivity would be increasingly important for venues hosting major events that require reliable internet access for participants, exhibitors and digital services.
Meanwhile, Demanlink Connexion Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Hanad Yusuf said the deployment marked an important step in supporting the growth of Sarawak’s business events industry.
He said improved connectivity infrastructure would contribute towards strengthening Kuching and Sarawak’s position as a competitive destination for international conferences and exhibitions.
The indoor 5G deployment at BCCK is expected to support future event requirements involving high-density users, including digital registrations, live streaming and other technology-enabled services. — DayakDaily
