KUCHING, July 27: Habitat Indigenous Daerah Untuk Pemulihan (Hidup) will assist in promoting activities and homestays within the Bengoh Dam by linking them to large companies in Sarawak, specifically within the Kuching area.

Hidup chairman George Young Si Ricord Jr said to kickstart the initiative, Hidup donated solar street lights to Uncle West Homestay.

He commended the entrepreneurial effort of Uncle West and the family in promoting eco tourism within the Bengoh Dam.

“Uncle West Homestay, being the pioneer has led the way and given opportunity for many new operators to set up their own businesses within the Dam,” said George in a statement today.

He said as the result of the Covid-19 pandemic, more partnerships are springing up between companies, NGOs and development agencies.

“They are finding common interests and learning from each other in the process,” said George after visited the Bengoh Dam and spending time at the homestay and with boat operators.

His trip to the Bengoh Dam was to seek and to understand how best to harness the potential of these enterprises in improving the livelihood of families within the Bengoh Dam area.

During the trip, he was informed that currently, the Bengoh Dam provides the majority of jobs for the Bengoh community so the potential of job creation for the community is equally large.

“Hidup will study how governments and donors can better promote ‘business enabling environments’ so that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the Bengoh community can contribute to the betterment of their own community,” said George. — DayakDaily
