LAWAS, April 11: Lawas’ new airport and seaport are among the efforts by the Sarawak government to make the northernmost district a preferred investment destination in Sarawak.

In a news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan emphasised the Sarawak government is working hard to ensure that Lawas continues to experience development on par with other parts of Sarawak.

“Various infrastructure developments will continue to be improved including utilities like water, and electricity supply as well as telecommunications.

“These efforts will change the landscape and increase investors’ confidence to choose Lawas as their place of investment,” he said at the swearing-in ceremony for Lawas District Council (MDL) members for 2023-2025 term last Thursday (April 6).

Apart from a new airport and seaport, Awang Tengah who is also Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment, noted that Lawas will also have a new Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) while various other education institutions and health facilities will be upgraded and strategic offices will be developed.

“With this, we will uplift the local economy in Lawas. As such, collaboration and cooperation at all levels of society is needed to balance the development between rural and urban areas which will improve the livelihood of the community entirely.

“However, there are developments that will take more time but each development will be implemented according to plan,” he added.

On the appointment of the new councillors, the Bukit Sari assemblyman reminded them that it is important to have the full picture and understanding of the Sarawak government’s direction and policies.

“Only with understanding the policies and priorities, the councillors can perform their responsibilities effectively, especially to foster understanding and encourage community involvement in order to improve the community wellbeing,” he said.

Last Thursday, a total of 32 councillors took their oath of office led by MDL chairman and Lawas District Officer Ladin Atok.

Lawas MP Dato Henry Sum Agong, Limbang Division Resident Yunus Tambi, MDL secretary Zulkipli Sahari and a representative of the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Abdoll Abu Muttalib Abu Seman were among those present. — DayakDaily
