KUCHING, May 16: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has clarified that the council is aware of and has consistently followed up on the road safety conditions and concerns of motorists using Jalan Sungai Tapang, which is under the jurisdiction of the Public Works Department (JKR).

According to a press statement issued by MPP chairman Tan Kai, the council has been communicating closely with JKR on the issue of maintenance of Jalan Sungai Tapang.

“On two occasions, MPP has written to JKR to conduct a study and improve the safety aspects along the road, especially near the residential area.

“MPP will forward the petition letter and continue to work closely with JKR to prioritise the safety of Jalan Sungai Tapang residents,” said Tan Kai in the press statement.

Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak has earlier today submitted a petition with signatures from 77 residents near Jalan Sungai Tapang, urging MPP to install speed bumps along the road.

Michael Kong, special assistant to DAP Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen, emphasised that speed bumps were necessary to reduce vehicle speeds along Jalan Sungai Tapang. — DayakDaily
