KUCHING, May 16: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak has submitted a petition with signatures from 77 residents near Jalan Sungai Tapang, urging Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) to install speed bumps along the road.
Michael Kong, special assistant to DAP Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen, emphasised that speed bumps were necessary to reduce vehicle speeds along Jalan Sungai Tapang.
“There have been numerous complaints regarding the alarming speeds at which vehicles travel along Jalan Sungai Tapang, despite it being a small neighbourhood with narrow and winding roads.
“This reckless behaviour by some drivers is disturbing, particularly within a small residential neighbourhoods, and it poses a significant risk to the residents and road users,” he said in a statement today.
Kong also highlighted that several motor accidents have occurred along Jalan Sungai Tapang due to the high speeds at which many vehicles navigate the road.
“The potential for severe accidents is imminent, especially if drivers fail to brake in time or notice oncoming traffic,” he added.
With that, Kong urged MPP to take proactive steps to ensure a secure environment for the residents there.
“Our community’s safety and well-being are of utmost importance and therefore the authorities must show a serious commitment to road safety,” he added. — DayakDaily
