KUCHING, Jan 26: The Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) has established its first-ever Youth Council to inspire young people to become future leaders.
MPKS chairman Dato Peter Minos said supported by the United Nations (UN) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the newly-formed council consists of 22 students aged 11 to 17 from various schools across Samarahan.
“The idea behind the Youth Council is to help young people learn about leadership and understand what it takes to become future leaders, functioning like a mini-Parliament.
“Youths are our future, and it is essential to nurture them early. Samarahan is home to motivated and eager youths, and a little encouragement from MPKS can go a long way in shaping them into tomorrow’s leaders,” Minos said in a statement yesterday (Jan 25).
The Youth Council held its first meeting yesterday, which served as an introduction and included a briefing by MPKS secretary Gustian Durani and Councillor Florine Christie on the council’s objectives, functions, and roles. — DayakDaily
