SIBU, April 26: Bilateral ties between Malaysia and Bhutan reached a significant milestone with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch a direct flight from Sibu to Paro, Bhutan, scheduled to commence on August 25
The direct flight is expected to boost tourism and contribute significantly to the Visit Malaysia 2026 Campaign, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said, as reported by TVS.
“This is not just a new flight, but a bridge connecting two rich and diverse cultures. It opens up space for tourism exchange, trade, and strengthening people-to-people ties,” he said in his speech read by his representative, Deputy Director-General (Promotion II) of the Malaysian Tourism Promotion Board, Samuel Lee, during the MoU signing ceremony today.
The MoU was signed by Ugyen Tenzin of Bhutan Airlines and Thomas Tan of Sak Soon Travel Agencies Sdn Bhd, and witnessed by Lee and Bhutan Tourism chief marketing officer Karma Wangdi.
Tiong also highlighted that the new flight route reflects the strong commitment of both countries in expanding cooperation in tourism, investment, and cultural exchanges.
He noted that the initiative aligns with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI, which emphasises harmony, honesty, and innovation.
“This route is in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI, which emphasises the values of harmony, honesty and innovation,” he said.
Meanwhile, Karma Wangdi, described the route from Sibu as a new opportunity to strengthen strategic ties between Malaysia and Bhutan, particularly in the Borneo region.
“Malaysia, especially Sarawak, is increasingly recognised as an important tourist destination for the Bhutanese people. This route will facilitate tourist movement and promote bilateral economic growth,” he said.
He further expressed confidence that the new route would also play a key role in deepening cooperation in tourism and investment between the two countries. – DayakDaily
