KUCHING, Jan 17: Minister of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) Dato Sri Juliahi Narawi calls on second-hand dealers to help stop vandalism by refusing to buy used cables and copper wire from certain party.

He urged them to gain better understanding of the Second-hand Dealers Act and asked for their cooperation to eradicate vandalism involving stealing of copper wire in cables.

“We need cooperation from local community, local leaders, local representatives to work with relevant agencies.

“MUT is reaching out to schools with anti-vandalism campaign.  We started last year to educate children and young generation that vandalism have adverse effect on people especially local community,” he said.

As frequent vandalism of telecommunication towers is worrisome, it has prompted him to call for stern action from relevant authorities.

Julaihi said irresponsible theft and the stealing of cables in telecommunication towers create problems in communication among end-users and affected facilities in an area.

“This kind of vandalism caused a halt in communication, and the cutting of component cable could lead to a delay in connecting the telecommunication services in the area.

“MUT, its agencies, and all those involved are taking steps to prevent and stop such vandalism,” he told reporters after handing over 23 new Pusat Ekonomi Digital (PEDI) ceremony at a hotel today. — DayakDaily
