Upon arrival, firefighters found waste burning at the landfill.

The firefighting operation was carried out using two hose lines and two nozzles, each 200 feet long, with water supplied from a nearby hydrant located about 600 feet from the site.

Firefighters also used two containers of foam and deployed three personnel equipped with breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze.

In addition, a firebreak was established to prevent the fire from spreading to other areas.

A representative from the local authority responsible for the landfill was present at the scene and informed firefighters that further firefighting work would be carried out the following day using an excavator and water tanker.

The excavator operator was reportedly still outside the Marudi area at the time.

The firefighting operation was suspended at 6.30pm and is scheduled to resume on Monday (Aug 24).

As of the suspension of operations, no part of the estimated 0.7-hectare fire area had been fully extinguished. — DayakDaily
