KUCHING, Aug 20: A total of 10 Early Tsunami Warning Systems are now up and running in Sarawak.

According to a news report from Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) yesterday (Aug 19), Sarawak Meteorological Department (MET) deputy director Siniarovina Urban Sinyaw said the system was installed in Sematan, Kampung Tebelu Sebuyau, Belawai District Office, Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) area dan Samalaju in Bintulu, Miri City Council (MCC) and New World Mart Lutong in Miri.

“This includes three existing systems in Miri, Bintulu and Mukah.

“MET Malaysia has also informed that the system has been successfully developed and its effectiveness in terms of sound and voice messages of the siren system has also been tested,” she said when met by reporters at MCC headquarters in Miri on Friday.

She said the two Tsunami Siren systems installed in Miri will further strengthen the Tsunami Early Warning System in Sarawak.

She added this is because Miri is located near the coastline that is exposed to the threat of tsunamis near the Philippines, Sabah and the Baram Basin. — DayakDaily
