KUCHING, May 9: Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) reassures Belawai residents that there is no cause for alarm if they hear a warning siren tomorrow (May 10).

According to a siren testing information notice posted today on MetMalaysia’s Facebook page, the siren is part of a scheduled test of the Malaysian Tsunami Early Warning System (SAATNM) at the Tanjung Manis District Office in Belawai, which will take place tomorrow from 9am to 11am.

“Residents in the surrounding area are advised not to panic at the sound of the siren because it is only a test.

“MetMalaysia will notify if there are any amendments,” read the statement.

For the record, MetMalaysia developed SAATNM in 2005, with the main purpose of issuing effective and immediate early tsunami warnings.

The warning is issued in the event of a tsunami in the Indian Ocean, Andaman Sea, South China Sea, Sulu Sea, Sulawesi Sea, and the Pacific Ocean that could potentially affect the country. — DayakDaily
