KUCHING, July 18: Members of the public are urged to take part in the 722 Walk in commemoration of Sarawak Day on July 22 and join fellow Sarawakians in celebrating the State’s history, heritage, unity and progress.
The event, which returns following the success of its inaugural edition last year, is jointly organised by MBKS, Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).
The walk will be held on Tuesday, July 22, starting at 6am at MBKS Square.
The programme will begin with a Sarawak Flag Raising Ceremony, followed by a Zumba warm-up session before participants set off on a 3.6-kilometre route from MBKS Boulevard through Jalan Padungan, Jalan Central Timur, Jalan Ellis, Jalan Lumba Kuda and Jalan William Tan before returning to MBKS via Jalan Padungan.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the 722 Walk is more than a recreational activity, as it embodies four key values of history, heritage, health and hope.
“The event provides an opportunity to remember Sarawak’s journey towards self-government in 1963 and to appreciate the milestones that have shaped the state’s development.
“At the same time, the walk celebrates Kuching’s multicultural identity and historic streets, which reflect the city’s rich heritage and cultural diversity,” he said in a statement today.
He emphasised that the programme also promotes an active lifestyle in support of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 on good health and well-being, while strengthening unity and fostering hope for a brighter future among Sarawakians.
Wee also expressed appreciation to CJC for co-organising the event and providing volunteers to serve as marshals throughout the walk.
“Their dedication and community spirit are truly appreciated,” he said.
During his ShallWeeTalk live session, he also encouraged participants to wear red, black and yellow, the colours of the Sarawak flag, as a symbol of pride and unity.
“Let us walk together, celebrate Sarawak Day with pride, and honour the unity and spirit that make Sarawak truly unique,” he said. — DayakDaily
