KUCHING, Apr 26: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is in the process of drafting a new policy which would require the registration of dogs used to guard construction sites, along with the payment of a deposit, as a proactive measure to curb animal abandonment once projects are completed.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report, MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the proposed policy stemmed from concerns over the abandonment of guard dogs once construction work ends.
Through this, owners or contractors will be held accountable for the dogs’ welfare, which includes ensuring that they will not be abandoned.
“We want to ensure these animals continue to be properly cared for. If they are moved to another site, they must be taken along and not simply left behind,” he said when met by the media at the flag-off of PET WALK 2.0 at the MBKS compound here today, where he represented Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Sim Kui Hian.
Meanwhile, he added that the council is evaluating a proposal to develop pet-friendly parks, which would enable the public and their pets to enjoy recreational activities together in a controlled environment.
He further explained that the proposal takes into account the needs of the community as well as feedback from stakeholders, including the Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA), while maintaining public safety as a top priority, especially in addressing rabies concerns.
“The implementation of these pet-friendly parks requires detailed studies, including public surveys and strict procedures such as verification of animal vaccinations before they are allowed into the area,” he said. — DayakDaily
