SIBU, Oct 27: There are no risks or side effects on one’s health from 5G radiofrequency radiation (RF-EMF) since its development and deployment in residential or densely populated areas, claims Malaysian Nuclear Agency Safety and Health Division senior research officer Roha Tukimin.

In a statement by the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) today, she explained that there are two types of radiation used by 5G: non-ionising and ionising. She said ionising radiation is similar to X-ray radiation, while non-ionising radiation is like radio, television, and telephone signals.

She further elaborated that the energy (watts) released by the development of 5G is only for sending signals, and it is very low and incapable of affecting human cells, as claimed by some parties.

“We conduct a lot of research in the field with the cooperation of universities and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

“We have been conducting research in Sarawak since 2016 with the cooperation of various agencies, and the reading results are low,” she said at an engagement session by the SMA on 5G development in Sibu yesterday (Oct 26).

Meanwhile, SMA general manager Dato Dr Anderson Tiong Ing Heng said the deployment of 5G is expected to support the development of digital economy initiatives and industrial revolution 4.0 (IR4.0) in Sarawak.

“The engagement session was held to provide transparent exposure to the people about the development of 5G in Sarawak, which is targeted at 59.6 per cent in Sarawak by 2024.

“This initiative is not only to improve service delivery but also to streamline the decision-making process, ultimately improving the overall experience for end users,” he said.

Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Sarawak Datuk Michael Tiang, MCMC Sarawak director Adiman Ajem, and Sibu Municipal Council chairman Clarence Ting were present during the engagement session. — DayakDaily
