KAPIT, June 28: The relocation of erosion-hit residents in Kampung Baru Kapit will be carried out under a 24.4-acre redevelopment site that includes housing and supporting facilities, says Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
In a Facebook post, Nanta who is Kapit MP, said he accompanied the Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to inspect Kampung Baru Kapit following the Sarawakku Sayang Kapit Programme yesterday, covering SK Kampung Baru, the existing settlement and the proposed new relocation site.
“Based on the 2025 census, Kampung Baru Kapit has 73 housing units, with 31 houses affected by soil erosion involving 43 heads of households and an additional nine family heads.
“On that basis, the Sarawak government is planning a new, safer and more organised settlement to relocate the affected families,” he said.
His remarks were aligned with earlier announcements by the Sarawak Premier on the relocation of erosion-affected settlements in Kapit.
He further said that the proposed new settlement site covers about 24.4 acres and will include 10 shop units, a petrol station and 55 housing units.
“For Phase 1, 55 housing units have been proposed to accommodate the immediate relocation needs of affected families,” he added.
At SK Kampung Baru, the delegation also inspected the newly completed school building under the RM1 billion Phase 1 dilapidated school redevelopment programme.
The RM12.84 million project comprises two four-storey blocks — a classroom block and an administration block — equipped with related facilities.
“The new school building will benefit 260 pupils and 33 teachers,” he said.
Nanta said the redevelopment of Kampung Baru Kapit is being implemented with the involvement of several agencies, including the Public Works Department (JKR), Ulu Rajang Development Agency (URDA), and Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA). — DayakDaily
