KUCHING, April 29: Hungary has identified a potential research collaboration with Sarawak in the field of biodiversity, focusing on exploring the State’s exceptionally rich and unique natural environment, alongside its healthy lifestyle, longevity patterns, and diverse cultural heritage, as part of a broader commitment to deepen bilateral engagement.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Hungarian Ambassador to Malaysia, Dr Sandor Sipos, said this initiative forms part of Hungary’s wider commitment to strengthen its presence in Sarawak through strategic cooperation spanning tourism, education, research, and cultural exchange, marking a new phase of more structured bilateral relations.
“For the future, it is about how Hungary can take part more actively and more prominently in Kuching. In June this year, we will be organising a joint event with the Sarawak State Library.
“Hungary also intends to participate in several programmes organised by the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), including the Kuching Jazz Festival in December, and potentially next year’s Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF), by bringing Hungarian folk music and dance ensembles to Kuching,” he said.
He made these remarks during a press conference after paying a courtesy call on the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Satria Pertiwi Complex today.
On education, he said Hungary remains committed to expanding cooperation through the provision of 40 scholarships for Malaysian students to pursue degree studies in English, while also strengthening institutional linkages between higher education institutions in both countries.
He added that both sides are also exploring the possibility of a joint exhibition between the Hungarian Ethnographic Museum and the Borneo Cultures Museum next year, aimed at further enhancing cultural ties and mutual understanding.
Also present at the courtesy call were Deputy Minister for Tourism Datuk Sebastian Ting, Deputy State Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Regional Office in Sarawak Dato Fenny Nuli and Deputy permanent secretary to the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP) Julin Alen. — DayakDaily
