KUCHING, Feb 8: The registration drive for the Sarawak Basic Needs Assistance (SKAS) programme saw an overwhelming response in the Satok constituency, as hundreds of eligible recipients turned up at two designated venues—Dewan Anak Seni Bandarsah and Satok Sports Complex.
Satok assemblyman Dato Ibrahim Baki said the two-day programme, held today and tomorrow (Feb 9), aims to ensure that eligible residents can register for the aid.
“This initiative is crucial as there are over 3,000 eligible recipients in Satok. The registration runs from 8am to 4.30pm, and if it proves successful, we will expand to other areas in Satok,” he said in a statement following his visit to the registration counters today.
He added that volunteers have been actively reaching out to recipients, even making phone calls to those who may be unaware of the programme.
“The turnout has been very encouraging, with a few hundred people registering today. We expect even more tomorrow. If necessary, we will extend the programme to next weekend. Otherwise, we will move to other areas like Kampung Segedup and Sungai Maong, where there is a significant eligible population,” he said.
Ibrahim lauded the Sarawak government’s commitment to easing the financial burden of the people, especially amid rising living costs.
“This year, the government has allocated nearly RM500 million for SKAS, and this figure is expected to grow annually. This demonstrates the government’s dedication to supporting those in need,” he said.
