KUCHING, May 26: Sarawakian singer and social media influencer Miss Alvy has voiced her frustration over soaring airfares ahead of the Gawai Dayak celebration, saying the cost of travelling home from Peninsular Malaysia has become “unreasonable” for many East Malaysians.
Taking to Threads, Miss Alvy said airfare prices to Borneo can reach up to RM1,000, which she claimed was enough to fund overseas travel.
“How can a ticket to go back to my hometown for Gawai cost up to RM1,000? With RM1,000, I can already travel to another country. Isn’t Borneo also part of Malaysia? Why is it so expensive?” she questioned, highlighting the high cost of domestic travel within the country.
Miss Alvy said many Sabah and Sarawak natives working or studying outside their home States have been forced to delay returning home for years due to expensive airfares.
She added that some families are only able to reunite during major holidays, while others miss out on homecoming altogether.
“Some people haven’t been able to go home for years because the ticket prices are just unreasonable,” she said.
Her post struck a chord online, with many netizens from Sabah and Sarawak sharing similar experiences of steep travel costs during festive seasons.
With a few users replying under her post, some said return tickets between Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia can reach RM1,900.
Others also shared that one-way flights could cost more than RM1,000, making it financially difficult for many to travel home.
The issue has once again sparked discussion online about the high cost of air connectivity between Borneo and Peninsular Malaysia, especially during festive seasons.
