Firefighters use total flooding technique to combat peat fires in Sungai Adong, Miri

The team strategically created fire breaks to contain the flames, effectively smothering them and preventing them from spreading further.

MIRI, March 30: In the ongoing operation against peat fires in Sungai Adong, Miri, firefighters from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 6 have employed the total flooding technique on the ground to prevent the fires from spreading.

Fire Investigation Division at Bomba Zone 6 head Awangku Mohd Hazmin Awang Zainal explained that this technique involves saturating the affected area with water to extinguish the fire and prevent reignition.

“These techniques have been crucial in successfully containing the peat fires and minimizing damage to the surrounding environment,” he stated.


As of the latest update, the peat fire has consumed 110 acres of the surrounding area, with only 10 per cent still emitting smoke.

The efforts of firefighters and emergency response teams have been effective in containing the majority of the fire and preventing further spread.

Four excavators have been deployed to create firebreaks and prevent the spread of peat fires.

Throughout the intense battle against the peat fires, firefighters received assistance from various agencies, including the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), the army, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage Sarawak (DID), as well as volunteers from Naim and Woodman. — DayakDaily
