KUCHING, June 30: Elevated road will make up the bulk of the 13.724-kilometre four-lane dual carriageway being built under the Sarawak Second Trunk Road (SSTR) Package A1-B, a major infrastructure project that is set to serve as a bypass linking Samarahan to the Batang Sadong Bridge upon completion.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas was briefed on the project’s progress during a working visit to the construction site today, where he reviewed ongoing works and received updates on its implementation.
According to the project briefing presented by Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak director Datu Ir Dr Cassidy Morris, the project comprises 11.8 kilometres of elevated roadway and 1.9 kilometres of at-grade road, forming a new 13.724-kilometre route built to JKR R5 standards.
“The project is part of the Sarawak government’s broader strategy to strengthen the region’s road network and improve connectivity between coastal and rural areas.
“As of today’s visit, physical progress stood at 2.68 per cent, with completion scheduled for August 2030,” JKR Sarawak said in a statement.
Once completed, the new bypass is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Samarahan and the Batang Sadong Bridge, while enhancing connectivity across the region.
The improved road network is also anticipated to support economic growth and development in the Samarahan Division and surrounding areas.
The SSTR is one of Sarawak’s key infrastructure initiatives aimed at improving accessibility and creating more efficient transport links throughout the region.
The project underscores the Sarawak government’s continued commitment to developing modern, safe and sustainable transport infrastructure to meet the region’s long-term development needs and improve the quality of life of its people. — DayakDaily
