KUCHING, March 17: Dato Ibrahim Baki’s appointment as Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy and Petros) is seen as a strategic move to ensure the continued growth of the energy sector in Sarawak.

According to TVS, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the decision was made following careful consideration by the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, taking into account Ibrahim’s experience and qualifications in related fields.

“Dato Ibrahim Baki not only has a background as a lawyer but has also previously served with PETRONAS.

“This appointment is a strategic step as he already understands the internal operations of PETRONAS, thus facilitating negotiations and relationships with PETROS,” he said when met at the Jelajah Bazar Ramadan Matang Jaya programme today.

He explained that Ibrahim’s experience in the energy industry will help strengthen the planning and implementation of policies related to renewable energy.

“The energy sector is critical, and with his experience, it will ease the implementation of policies and strategies related to renewable energy.

“Sarawak is also poised to be an energy supplier to the Peninsula and Singapore, in addition to playing a role in the development of the Borneo Power Grid, which is now receiving attention from the federal government,” he added.

He further noted that the appointment is seen as an effort to strengthen Sarawak’s position in the energy sector while ensuring closer cooperation between the State and federal governments in realising the sustainable energy development agenda for the country and the ASEAN region.

Earlier today, Ibrahim, who is also Satok assemblyman and Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice president, was appointed as a deputy minister in a swearing-in ceremony at Astana Negeri.

During a press conference following the ceremony, Abang Johari said that Ibrahim’s legal knowledge, along with the experiences he has gained during his time with PETRONAS, would allow him to help the Sarawak government in its ongoing negotiations with PETRONAS. — DayakDaily
