KUCHING, April 24: Pemier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is poised to take the helm of the Malaysian Islamic Welfare Organisation (Perkim) unopposed for the 2025–2028 term, following the withdrawal of the two other nominees in a show of unanimous support.

Abang Johari accepted the sole nomination to lead Perkim as its next national president, expressing deep gratitude to the organisation’s members for their trust and pledging to uphold the vision of its founders in advancing the welfare of Muslims across Malaysia.

“I would like to extend my deepest thanks and appreciation to all Perkim members for their support in nominating me to lead the organisation for the coming term,” he said in a statement issued by the Office of the Premier of Sarawak today.

He also paid tribute to outgoing president Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who has helmed the organisation since 2006, acknowledging his longstanding contributions and dedication.

“I will do my best to continue his efforts in fulfilling the vision and principles of Perkim’s founding figures, particularly the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj,” Abang Johari added, referring to Malaysia’s first Prime Minister and founding patron of Perkim.

He further extended his appreciation to Member of Parliament for Arau Dato’ Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim, and Dato’ Ustaz Mohd Nakhaei Ahmad, who both withdrew from the nomination and voiced their support for his presidency.

According to Malaysia Gazette, Shahidan and Nakhaei announced their withdrawal at a press conference held at Perkim Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur on April 23, stating their confidence in Abang Johari’s leadership.

Abang Johari’s official appointment will be confirmed at Perkim’s 64th Annual General Meeting, scheduled to be held soon at the Malaysian Islamic Training Institute (ILIM) in Bangi.

The AGM is expected to chart a new course for the organisation as it seeks to strengthen its role in Islamic missionary efforts (dakwah) and social welfare initiatives in Malaysia. — DayakDaily
