KUCHING, April 24: Serian District Council’s (SDC) new chairman Dato Peter Minos vowed to tackle the persistent issue of delayed projects, describing such delays as “a sin and a disgrace” that deprive communities of desperately needed development.

In a press statement, he called for greater accountability for these delayed projects, stating that: “The usual excuse for the inordinate delays in the Councils is that some other departments play excessively with red tape and procrastination. Most likely so, talking from experience, but Councils also partly contribute to the delays by not aggressively doing the follow-up or chasing-up.

“Delays of projects already approved and funded is, to me, reflecting very badly on the government. It is really a ‘sin and a disgrace’, for the people need them desperately.”

As newly sworn-in chairman of the council, Minos said he plans to rally those in-charge to list out all stalled projects, big and small, by constituency.

“I will give priorities to them. And give datelines for completion, no more excuses and no more delays,” he assured.

“I’m not a Minister, but I must say it is the perennial bad attitudes of the agencies involved in development projects. They make full use of the laws, rules and regulations for the delays. They play excessively on the red tape and bureaucracy. It is a culture that really must go, for it is bad for both government and people,” he added. – DayakDaily
