KUCHING, Aug 20: Sarawak has recorded an increase in the number of dengue cases with 121 cases as compared to the same period in August last year.

Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, said a total of 263 dengue cases were reported in Sarawak last year, while as of August this year, the total number of dengue cases is at 384.

“However, compared to the whole of Malaysia, the situation is still under control in Sarawak,” he said during an anti-dengue campaign held at the Futsal Court in RPR Batu Kawa Unity Hall here today.

He noted that for Malaysia’s 31st epidemiology week (July 31 to Aug 6), the number of dengue cases reported was 1,394 compared to 1,542 cases in the previous week.

“Even though there is a decrease in the number of cases, and there are no deaths due to dengue, dengue causes unnecessary death,” he added.

Dr Sim also commended the residents of RPR Batu Kawa for only having one case of dengue reported last year.

“As of today, there have been no cases recorded. So, let’s have a new target of zero dengue cases,” he said. — DayakDaily
