KUCHING, Oct 12: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Bandar Kuching Office handed over an allocation amounting to RM112,600 to SK Kenyalang for the upgrading of the school’s basketball court and construction of an awning outside the administrative and teacher’s block.

According to incumbent Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii, the school’s basketball court was very old with an uneven surface and severe cracks, which could cause harm to students and teachers.

“In addition, my constituency’s office also gave funding to assist the school in constructing a new rain cover (awning extension) at the administrative and teacher offices.

“This awning can provide shade for students from the sun and rain while waiting for their parents to pick them up,” he said in a statement today following a visit to SK Kenyalang with Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong.

The allocation, Dr Yii said, also covered the retiling of the old flooring of the school’s conference room which is estimated to cost RM23,000.

Prior to this, he had contributed more than RM40,000 to the school for the improvement of poor infrastructure including windows and doors of the staff office which were severely damaged by termites.

“Most of the fire extinguishers in the school are also overdue and some have malfunctioned. So there is an urgent need for them to be replaced.

“We noted that the school’s expenditure in various aspects is increasing every year. At the same time, schools like SK Kenyalang rely highly on its PIBG (Parents and Teachers Association) to raise funds for the school’s operation,” he said.

With that, he recognised that many schools including those in urban areas need more investment and contribution to improve the environment.

Despite the minimal allocation, Dr Yii pledged to do his best to ensure the needs of schools were met so that both students and teachers can have a comfortable and safe environment for learning and teaching. — DayakDaily
