Covid-19: Bintulu to ease some SOPs but residents not in the clear yet

BINTULU, June 29: Bintulu residents can expected to see some adjustments to standard operating procedures (SOPs) to give people a little leeway and convenience.

Even so, Bintulu MP Dato Sri Tiong King Sing reminded them that now is still not the time to let their guard down with regards to Covid-19 until zero new cases are achieved.

“The number of cases in Bintulu is seeing a downward trend recently but the situation is still not stable yet and can fluctuate as there are still specific clusters such as among contract workers in oil and gas (sector) and Samalaju Industrial Park, as well as lorry drivers.

“At the same time, there are sporadic cases in housing areas that may break out if we are not careful.

“Therefore, we should not be complacent and must continue to be cautious and follow the SOP,” he said in a statement posted on his Facebook page today.

Although there would be some slight adjustments to the SOPs according to the current situation in the district, Tiong, who is also the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to China, emphasised that Bintulu is still far from its goal of achieving zero Covid-19 cases.

“We must keep in mind that zero cases is our ultimate goal. The adjustments to the SOP are merely to allow people a little leeway and convenience.

“Our economy is gradually recovering and a lot of preparations are needed before reopening certain industries. All parties must take the SOP seriously and not relax, so that our hard work in the past few months would not be wasted,” he emphasised.

Tiong pointed out that Bintulu’s situation is different from other districts due to it being a heavy industry zone which attracts many people from other districts to work or look for jobs here.

“There is high mobility of people in and out of Bintulu. We welcome them but we cannot compromise our health and life either,” he said.
