SIBU, Aug 14: Construction is expected to start on the Yayasan Sarawak International School here this year.
The project at the old airport runway was supposed to start in 2020 but was shelved due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We should be able to start work by this year and complete it in two years because the one in Semenggoh is also two years (sic),” said Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn today after officiating at the opening ceremony for the Dual Language Programme (DLP) Sarawak Level 2 Training 2023 session here.
The school will be able to cater for 500 students; 80 per cent of whom would be students from the B40 group.
The school aims to give free education to those in the B40 group, and students in this group would be able to enrol for free.
The Sarawak government has also set aside a 20 per cent quota for the non-B40 group who will pay school fees.
Touching on the subject of a special school for the hardcore poor, Sagah opined that constructing a new school for this purpose would not be cheap.
“It would cost more than RM50 million. Priority should be given to repairing dilapidated schools which is much cheaper,” he added.
On DLP Sarawak which is in its fourth year of implementation, he said the Sarawak government will continue this commitment to provide financial support for basic needs such as training, teaching and learning materials, for Science and Mathematics teachers teaching the DLP classes.
“In order to further enhance the implementation, the Sarawak government has also provided teaching and learning resources to all primary schools implementing DLP Sarawak. The resources provided include National Geographic learning materials and Teacher Guide Book and Student Activity Book. These support resources are also in use in the classes,” he emphasised.
