KUCHING, May 12: A citizen has highlighted what was claimed as an unfair parking trend in parking enforcement within the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) jurisdiction, alleging that flaws in the Pay & Go smart parking system are financially burdening workers and business owners in parts of the city centre.

In an email addressed to DayakDaily, the complainant highlighted the parking zones along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman near Sarawak Plaza and Affin Bank, as well as along Jalan Chan Chin Ann, where the Pay & Go app does not allow the purchase of a monthly season pass.

“For over a month, formal complaints have been lodged regarding the Pay & Go smart parking system to relevant parties, mainly the council and Pay & Go.

“Despite this, there has been zero remedial action from the service provider or the council. Instead, enforcement has intensified,” said the complainant.

The complainant said that a standard monthly season pass costs RM42.40, but because this option is missing, workers in the Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman and Jalan Chan Chin Ann commercial zones are forced to pay daily rates of RM11 to RM12.

This translates to RM240-RM260 per month for over 20 working days, which is a markup of over 500 per cent.

The complainant further claimed a lack of accountability, adding that despite being informed by the public that the system does not offer season pass purchases in these zones, Pay & Go attendants continue to patrol these specific streets daily for overparking. — DayakDaily
