SARIKEI, Feb 25: The closure of the Jakar section (CH 42+500) along the Pan Borneo Highway is only temporary and will last two months to ensure the safety of road users during the installation works for sewers and earth retaining walls at the site.

In a news report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), the Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak Unit gave assurance that the installation works will be completed as soon as possible to minimise the inconvenience on people, especially traders in Jakar town.

Federal Deputy Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii, who is also Sarikei MP, has urged contractors to complete the works on time according to schedule.

On Friday, Huang had visited the Jakar section site to conduct an inspection, following complaints from traders there whose business has been affected by the road closure.

He was accompanied by the traders along with Kapitan Ling Dien Yong and teams from the Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak Unit and Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak.

Thereafter, the group also visited the Sarikei Foochow Association Cemetery to inspect works to tar seal the road as the existing tar-sealed road are too inclined, making it difficult for motorists to see oncoming vehicles and drive on.

The Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak Unit also gave assurance to complete works for the new tar road entering the cemetery before the Qing Ming or Tomb Sweeping Festival which falls on April 5 this year.

Huang reminded responsible parties to ensure both worker and traffic safety at all construction sites along the Pan Borneo Highway. — DayakDaily
