KUCHING, June 29: Burst water pipes have been identified as the cause of persistent low water pressure affecting more than 20 households at Lorong 5, Jalan Sungai Tapang.
Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap said the issue was confirmed during a joint site inspection today with Penghulu Lai Boon Khee, officers from Sarawak Water and the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB), following repeated complaints from residents.
“During the inspection, technical officers discovered two burst pipes which were contributing to the disruption in water supply to the affected area.
“Sarawak Water has confirmed that repair works will be carried out as soon as possible to restore normal water pressure,” he said in a statement.
Yap said while immediate repairs would address the current disruption, a long-term solution is required due to the ageing condition of the existing water infrastructure.
He said he had requested Sarawak Water to prepare a detailed costing and Bill of Quantities (BQ) for the replacement of the old water pipes along the affected stretch.
“The existing water pipes have served the area for many years and are showing signs of deterioration.
“While repairing the burst pipes will address the immediate issue, replacing the ageing pipeline is the long-term solution to ensure a more reliable water supply for the residents,” he added.
Preliminary estimates by Sarawak Water put the cost of replacing the pipeline at about RM250,000.
Yap said he would apply for funding under his Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) allocation once the detailed BQ is submitted.
“The welfare of residents remains my priority. Access to a stable and reliable water supply is a basic necessity, and I will continue working closely with the relevant agencies to secure the necessary funding and expedite the implementation of this project,” he stressed.
He also expressed appreciation to Penghulu Lai Boon Khee, Sarawak Water and JBALB officers for their prompt response and cooperation in addressing the issue.
Yap assured residents that both the immediate repair works and the proposed pipeline replacement project will continue to be closely monitored until the matter is fully resolved. — DayakDaily
