KUCHING, Aug 12: Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad (BPHB) has joined forces with three international partners in a landmark move to develop a liquid hydrogen facility, explore the feasibility of establishing Bio-LNG production capabilities, and advance bioethanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) projects.
The collaboration was formalised through the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) during the Ministry of Energy and Environment Sustainability’s (MEESTY) Public-Industry Engagement Day and the official launch of the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P) at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Monday (Aug 11), witnessed by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Representing BPHB was board member Dato Sri Fong Joo Chung, while the respective strategic partners were Sakura Ferroalloys Sdn Bhd general manager Rudolph du Perez, Borneo Biogas Pte Ltd chairman Tan Soo Kong, and China’s Jiangsu Guofu Hydrogen Energy Equipment Co. Ltd (GUOFUHEE) chairman Wu Pinfang.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, BPHB emphasised that the partnerships are a strategic push that will strengthen Sarawak’s position as a regional hub for green energy and sustainable fuels.

The first MoU with Sakura Ferroalloys focuses on decarbonisation initiatives through the development of bioethanol and SAF, aligning with Sarawak’s Net Zero Strategy 2050 and international environmental frameworks such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
“Building on earlier engagements in June 2025, the partnership seeks to turn sustainability ambitions into concrete industrial solutions that cut emissions and promote clean fuel adoption across the region,” BPHB stated in a statement.
The second MoU, signed with Borneo Biogas, will assess the feasibility of Bio-LNG production in Sarawak, including bunkering infrastructure and the use of Bio-LNG to power port support vessels.
This collaboration will also involve technical and operational knowledge-sharing, reinforcing BPHB’s long-term environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitments.

The third MoU with China-based GUOFUHEE aims to establish a liquid hydrogen facility in Bintulu, positioning the port as a critical hub for hydrogen logistics and exports.
The agreement also addresses local hydrogen demand for Sarawak’s industrial and transport sectors, with potential integration of hydrogen-powered vessels into port operations.
“The collaboration reinforces Sarawak’s aspirations to become a global leader in hydrogen exports, with Bintulu Port playing a pivotal role in infrastructure readiness and operational capabilities,” BPHB added.
These agreements mark a significant step toward achieving Sarawak’s Net Zero 2050 goals while catalysing innovation, economic growth, and global leadership in renewable and low-carbon energy. — DayakDaily
