“The victim was contacted by an unknown number on WhatsApp, where the suspect sent several personal photographs believed to have been obtained from social media, including images involving sensitive content.

“The suspect then allegedly threatened to disseminate the images on social media if the victim failed to comply with payment demands,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (June 2).

Fearing the exposure of the images, the victim made two transactions totalling RM230 into an e-wallet account registered under an unidentified individual.

Mohd Haide confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion.

Police have reminded the public to exercise caution when receiving messages or calls from unknown numbers, especially those involving threats or demands for money, and to avoid sharing or storing personal content that could be misused.

Members of the public are also advised not to make any payments in such situations, but instead to preserve evidence of communication and lodge a police report immediately. — DayakDaily
