KUCHING, Feb 19: Authorities are currently discussing establishing a Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) between Sarawak and Singapore.

The meeting, held this afternoon, consists of representatives from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Transport, and Malaysia Airport Berhad officials.

Presently, VTL between Singapore and Malaysia is only with Johor Baru and Kuala Lumpur.

Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the Sarawak government wants the VTL to be extended to the State, entering through Kuching and Miri.

“I believe there should be no problem for us to get the approval because the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) is known for its strict, managing procedures and how we handled Covid-19 since the pandemic began.

“This is why cases in Sarawak remain low over the past few months, even now when there is a big spike of Omicron cases worldwide,” Abdul Karim told reporters after launching Beccari’s Rattan Valley trail at Kubah National Park.

While Sarawak looks forward to increasing its number of visitors, especially in tourism, he asserts that studies will be carried out before any approvals are given.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob recently announced that Malaysia and Brunei had agreed in principle to implement air and land VTL between both countries following his discussion with the Sultan of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah in Bandar Seri Begawan on Feb 15. — DayakDaily
