BELAWAI, Oct 1: Terubok fish (toli shad) are now reappearing in the Belawai waters following the deployment of artificial reef balls across Sarawak’s shorelines, says Sarawak Deputy Minister for Urban Development and Natural Resources Datuk Len Talif Salleh.

According to a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), he said the Sarawak Reef Ball project had boosted the State’s marine resources, with the local fishermen enjoying an increase in their fish catch, particularly terubok fish.

“Therefore, the government will continue to commit and focus on helping the wellbeing of fishermen and strive to improve the socio-economy of the local community.

“I also hope that this initiative would ease the burden faced by fishermen, especially in facing this monsoon season,” he said when presenting the Fishermen’s Fishing Equipment Input Assistance (BIPPN) amounting to RM630,000 to 315 fishermen of Tanjung Manis in a ceremony held at Medan Selera Belawai yesterday (Sept 30).

The recipients comprised fishermen from Kampung Hulu Rajang, Kampung Rajang, Kampung Baru Rajang, Kampung Tepi Laut Belawai, Kampung Jerijeh Baru and Kampung Jerijeh.

The assistance included fish storage boxes, life jackets, scales and nets for their use in fishing. — DayakDaily
