SARIKEI, Aug 9: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has proposed opening a Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) campus in Tanjung Manis, says Kuala Rajang Datuk Len Talif Salleh.
Speaking during a press conference on the third day of the Sarikei Division SKS Programme 2026 at the Sarikei Sports Complex here today, he said the proposal was conveyed to him personally by Abang Johari on Saturday (Aug 8).
He said this followed his proposal to the Premier for a higher education centre to be established in the Sarikei Division to provide technical and vocational courses closer to young people in the division.
“Although he did not give a direct response, he personally mentioned to me the idea of a CENTEXS campus in Tanjung Manis,” he said in a news report by TVS.
Elaborating further, he said Tanjung Manis was chosen due to its proximity to Sarikei, but detailed plans for its construction had yet to be determined.
“In terms of travel distance from Sarikei, it may be built in Tanjung Manis because Sarikei now has a new bridge connecting the two areas. If it is in Sarikei, that would also not be a problem,” he said.
He said the priority was to ensure that the courses eventually offered by Centexs would be aligned with current industry needs, while providing local youths with opportunities to acquire skills required by the job market.
In another development, regarding the proposal to build an indoor stadium in Sarikei, he said two locations were being considered for the project, but details would be announced later.
“I have two areas that have already been considered, but let the Premier announce them later,” he said.
Len Talif, who is also Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment, hoped the stadium would be able to accommodate about 5,000 people, similar to the capacity of the indoor stadium in Betong. — DayakDaily
