KUCHING, March 22: Some 80,000 homes in Samariang and Tupong constituencies will benefit from the completion of the Phase 1 of Samariang Water Supply Project this year, said Assistant Minister of Sarawak Utilities (Water Supply) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi.

He said the RM85 million project, funded by the Sarawak government and managed by the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB), is expected to be ready by August this year.

“Once completed, it will help to improve the water supply system in the areas experiencing low water pressure.

“It will benefit the population in Petra Jaya area, especially those along Jalan Sultan Tengah as well as in Santubong and Damai,” said Dr Abdul Rahman when met by reporters after visiting the Phase 1 of Samariang Water Supply Project site, here today.

Dr Abdul Rahman, who is also Pantai Damai assemblyman, noted the construction works on two high level water tanks are almost done and expected to be completed in August, while another one is still in progress and due for completion by the end of this year.

“The project, which was supposed to be completed by February this year, was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and problems involving manpower,” he added.

Also present during the site visit were Assistant Minister in Chief Minister’s Department Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, who is also the assemblywoman for Samariang, and JBALB director Chang Kuet Shian. — DayakDaily
