KUCHING, April 30: Some 2,000 enthusiastic members of the public, including 70 autistic children, put on their jogging shoes to participate in Bunny Autism Run 2023.

Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang said that the main objective of the run is to spread awareness of autism among Kuching residents in conjunction with World Autism Awareness Month in April.

He said the event serves to accumulate funds for the yearly operations of Kuching Autism Association’s (KAA) Training Centre and to partly fund the upcoming new education block, scheduled to begin construction in October this year.

“KAA has raised RM90,000, and I will personally allocate RM10,000 from my minor rural project (MRP) allocation to the association,’’ he said.

“This year’s run saw some 2,000 runners participating, making it one of the biggest runs in Kuching since it was first organised in 2016,” he told reporters after officiating at the event held at the compound of Kuching City South Council (MBKS) early this morning.

Billy added he is also a supporter of KAA as he has a family member who is autistic and joined the event in 2017 after recovering from heart surgery.

“The run also encourages and recognises the participation of various individuals, corporations, as well as other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) supporting the autism community in Kuching,” he said.

The theme for the run was selected to coincide with the Lunar Year of the Rabbit. — DayakDaily
