LUNDU, Aug 27: Students of SMK Lundu and SMK Sematan are set to benefit from improved learning facilities following nearly RM820,000 in repair and upgrading works aimed at creating a safer, more comfortable and conducive school environment.
The two projects, implemented under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), involve upgrading the Form Six classrooms at SMK Lundu and the multipurpose hall at SMK Sematan.
Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang stressed that both projects must be completed within the approved scope, specifications and contract periods to ensure students and teachers can benefit from the upgraded facilities without unnecessary delays.
He also reminded contractors to adhere strictly to project timelines, warning that delays could result in the projects becoming “sick projects”.
“Such situations would not only cause losses to the government in terms of allocation and implementation, but also affect the schools, teachers and students who should benefit from the projects.
“Providing better educational facilities is an important investment in improving the comfort, safety and effectiveness of the learning process,” he said, as reported by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas).
The SMK Sematan multipurpose hall upgrade, valued at RM399,998.03, is being undertaken by Tarigas Construction.
The six-month project began on Aug 10 and is scheduled for completion on Jan 25, 2027. Works include the installation of PVC ceilings and awnings around the hall, upgrades to the stage and storeroom, painting and the replacement of fans.
Meanwhile, Asim Enterprise is undertaking RM420,000 in repair and upgrading works at SMK Lundu.
The project began on Aug 18 and is expected to be completed by Dec 8. It involves roof replacement, installation of awnings, electrical works, replacement of classroom windows and doors, installation of security grilles and repainting of the building.
Billy reiterated that timely completion was crucial, as delays could affect not only government expenditure and project implementation but also deprive schools, teachers and students of the facilities they need.
The schools also urged contractors to coordinate with their respective administrations and provide advance notice of planned works to minimise disruptions to teaching and learning. — DayakDaily
