KUCHING, May 18: Twenty-eight companies have entered the race for Sarawak’s cascading power sources (CPS) projects, reflecting strong industry interest in the State’s latest renewable energy initiatives.
Sarawak Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi said Sarawak Energy Berhad has opened a Request for Proposal (RFP) for Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to develop cascading power sources across several river basins.
“Sarawak Energy has offered an RFP to Independent Power Producers for the development of cascading power sources in the Tutoh, Belaga, Danum, Balui and Gaat river basins.
“So far, 28 companies have registered their interest to participate in this RFP exercise,” he said during his winding-up speech in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.
The CPS projects form part of Sarawak’s additional renewable energy generation mix, alongside hydropower, solar, pumped storage hydropower (PSH) and biomass under ongoing development and planning.
Beyond CPS, Julaihi said feasibility studies for PSH are currently underway at Bakun, Murum and Padawan.
He added that floating solar potential is being studied at Bengoh, Batang Ai, Bakun and Murum, while ground-mounted solar assessments are ongoing in Gedong, Selangau, Bintulu, Samalaju, Baram and Miri. — DayakDaily
