KUCHING, Oct 13: A study is underway to identify the cause of damage to Sungai Musah Bridge in Kapit, says Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

According to a news report from TV Sarawak (TVS), Nanta said a report will be announced once it is completed.

Nanta also said that all related actions and matters have been implemented, and he and several parties, such as the Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Sarawak (MIPD) Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan, have gone to the field to monitor the condition of the bridge.

“First, I would like to explain here to Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen that the bridge is under the supervision of the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) and MIPD, not the Ministry of Works (KKR).

“However, as a member of Parliament in the area and also the Works Minister, I am still responsible for ensuring that the cause of this bridge collapse is identified to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future,” he told TVS at his office at the Parliament building in Kuala Lumpur today.

He was responding to the statement from DAP Chairman Chong Chieng Jen, who said that KKR took no action regarding the issue involved.

Nanta said the matter should not be politicised as it takes some time for the relevant parties to conduct the investigation and study.

“For that reason, I ask Chong to be a little patient because the responsible party is conducting an investigation and is arranging an alternative route for users in the area because this investigation cannot be done in haste.

“We (KKR) and myself take this matter seriously,” he added.

On Oct 4, Chong wanted Nanta to provide a full account of the reasons behind the broken Nanga Musah Bridge at Song, Kapit, which was constructed for RM55 million and lasted less than ten years. — DayakDaily
