KUCHING, Nov 2: Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah has requested the Sarawak Social Welfare Department (JKMS) to look into providing protection, healthcare, and education for two-year-old Sarawakian baby girl Missclyen Roland, who suffers from ‘werewolf syndrome’.

Missclyen was born with congenital generalised hypertrichosis (CGH), an extremely rare condition that causes excessive facial and upper body hair, which is more commonly known as ‘werewolf syndrome’.

Apart from having hair all over her face, Missclyen was also born without nostrils.

Fatimah, who is the Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development (KPWK) Sarawak minister, stated that Missclyen currently possesses the persons with disabilities (OKU) card for assistance as a disabled individual.

“There is also the assistance for childcare. Missclyen is among the four siblings and the family previously received the general assistance. So, this can be changed to a children assistance scheme, and the other is healthcare assistance.

“Earlier, Mr Roland (Missclyen’s father) stated that his daughter occasionally suffers from asthma and other health problems and must be sent to a hospital or private clinic, spending at least RM80 at a private clinic.

“So, we can see that there is a need for medical assistance here, and I’ve asked the welfare officers to look into what assistance under JKMS can be channelled to this family,” she told reporters today during her follow-up visit to Missclyen and her family in Bintulu.

She continued by stating that they must consider the long-term preparations for Missclyen’s education as well as the preparations that must be made for the surrounding community, including not only family members but also individuals within the school community, such as students and teachers.

“The transition process from being at home to entering the school community is crucial. It is important for people to become familiar with Missclyen’s condition so that they can accept her and she can attend school like any other child.

“This is her right, and proper preparations are necessary to ensure a smooth transition. Every child, including Misscylen, has the right to receive an education, protection, and healthcare,” she added.

It was reported yesterday (Nov 1) that Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah has conveyed her wish to adopt Missclyen.

In the letter from Istana Negara dated Oct 10, 2023, Her Majesty expressed her intention to adopt Missclyen, providing assurances that the costs of her education and treatment for CGH would be covered.
