SELANGOR, Sept 11: The Sarawak government will recalculate the proposed incentives for athletes who won medals at the Para Malaysia Games (Para Sukma) 2026 before submitting the matter to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for consideration.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report, Sarawak Women, Children, and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said it would be based on the number of gold, silver, and bronze medals the Sarawak contingent won.
She added that the incentive structure used for the 2024 edition of the games would serve as the basis for the calculation.
“Based on what we have done previously, we will calculate the amount according to the gold, silver and bronze medals.
“If we use the incentive structure applied in 2024, we will calculate the total amount and present it to the Premier. If the Premier agrees, only then will we announce it,” she said when met by reporters after the Sarawak Contingent Gala Dinner here on Thursday (Sept 10).
She added that incentives should be implemented in tandem for both Sukma and Para Sukma, as both games are vital to the State’s sports development agenda and should not be viewed separately.
“We also need to look at Sukma because whenever we develop sports, we usually develop both together.
“It cannot be Sukma alone, and it cannot be Para Sukma alone either. Both together, God willing,” she said.
Sarawak finished third at Para Sukma 2026 with 138 medals: 52 gold, 32 silver, and 54 bronze.
Hosts Selangor emerged as overall champion with 200 medals (93 gold, 55 silver, 52 bronze), followed by Sabah in second place with 165 medals (69 gold, 51 silver, 45 bronze). — DayakDaily
